The Jeremy Kyle Show has been rapped by broadcasting watchdog Ofcom for failing to bleep out an expletive during a daytime transmission.

The use by a guest of a four-letter swear word of the "most offensive and abusive" nature on the ITV1 talk show was deemed "unacceptable" by Ofcom.

ITV said the show's Manchester-based staff missed the word due to the guest's strong Scottish accent.

Ofcom conceded it was "unintentional" but issued ITV with a warning.

It said the broadcaster "should ensure that offensive and inappropriate language is not broadcast before the watershed".

ITV also added that none of its subtitlers or compliance officers had picked up on the expletive either.

Heated discussion

The programme prompted one complaint from a viewer in Scotland and was rapidly re-edited to ensure the expletive was not broadcast in a subsequent repeat.

It was during a heated discussion between Kyle and his guest that the swear word was used.

The hard-hitting confessional talk show has been criticised in the past.

Last year, a district judge condemned the programme as a "human form of bear-baiting" and existed to "titillate bored members of the public with nothing better to do".
