McGovern to write new BBC drama

McGovern has worked on drama series Cracker, The Street and The Lakes

Award-winning TV writer Jimmy McGovern is to write a new drama for BBC One, partly inspired by the Ingrid Bergman film The Yellow Rolls Royce.

McGovern will write five 45-minute episodes for the series, currently given the working title Moving On.

Each episode will take place in a house and involve a family or individual moving in or out.

The Liverpool-based drama will be screened over a single week on BBC One next year.

Known for writing gritty, post-watershed dramas based around hard-hitting social issues, McGovern's past credits include Cracker, The Street and The Lakes.

'Riveting'

The BBC said Moving On would also explore contemporary issues facing Britain.

"I want BBC Daytime to be topical and to grab people's attention, so a drama from someone of Jimmy's calibre and credibility fits the bill perfectly," said Liam Keelan, controller for BBC Daytime.

Jimmy McGovern said: "Our aim is to produce riveting drama to an extremely high standard.

"Part of the attraction is that we'll be making the programmes in Liverpool, our home town, a city full of talent. I can't wait to get started".

Bergman's 1964 film The Yellow Rolls Royce, also starring Rex Harrison and Shirley MacLaine, featured three stories of people who had all owned the same car at one point in their lives.
