Matt Lucas and Kevin McGee were together for four-and-a-half years

Little Britain star Matt Lucas has split from the partner he "married" in a civil partnership ceremony in 2006.

Lucas and Kevin McGee, who were together for four-and-a-half years, said in a joint statement that their separation was "amicable".

They celebrated their civil partnership with a lavish, pantomime-themed reception with Lucas dressed as Aladdin and McGee as Prince Charming.

Guests included Lucas's comedy partner David Walliams and Sir Elton John.

The statement said: "It is with sadness that Matt and Kevin announce that their relationship has come to an end.

"Their separation is amicable. They ask the press to respect their privacy at this time and to exercise restraint in any reporting of this matter."

The couple's ceremony took place at private members' club Home House, in London, with the reception at Banqueting House in Whitehall.

Other guests included comedian Paul O'Grady, who went as Captain Hook, and EastEnders actor Steve McFadden - as the Demon Prince - accompanied by on-screen mother Barbara Windsor, as the Fairy Godmother.

Last month, it was reported that Lucas and Walliams were working on two new films.

Hollywood trade paper Variety said the pair were developing a project with US studio DreamWorks as well as another film to be made with UK studio Working Title, the home of Hot Fuzz and Atonement.
