 | | Sunday, 30 April, 2000, 00:38 GMT 01:38 UK Anna Ford's singing dream comes true  The newscaster used to sing in folk clubs as a student Anna Ford has appeared on Stars Sing the Beatles, banishing decades of regret for turning down an appearance on the Morecambe and Wise Show. The BBC newsreader chose to sing Here There and Everywhere as her contribution to the show, which also featured former EastEnders actor Sid Owen, boy band A1 and crooner Engelbert Humperdinck. Dressed in a cream trouser suit, Ms Ford, 56, performed the song which she has been practising in the bathroom at home. "It's a lovely sweet, simple song, it's a love song and it suits my voice," she told the show's presenter, Jane McDonald. "And it was Paul McCartney's favourite song - I only found that out recently," she added. Student singer Ms Ford, whose parents were both West End actors, told BBC One viewers she once harboured ambitions to be a professional singer.
As a student at Manchester University in the 1960s she toured the clubs with her guitar, performing folk songs and earning �5 a night. Eventually she settled on a career in journalism but the desire to sing never quite left her. Regrets Ms Ford revealed on Friday that she had always regretted not singing on the Morecambe and Wise show. She told newspapers that Eric and Ernie invited her to sing in a sketch with them soon after her colleague Angela Rippon's famous dance routine on their television show in 1976. But she turned the opportunity down fearing it would "seem derivative" after Ms Rippon's "wonderful dance".
