Action movie Vantage Point, starring Dennis Quaid and Forrest Whitaker, has topped the UK and Irish box office in its first weekend on release.

It nudged Tudor drama The Other Boleyn Girl and American football comedy The Game Plan into second and third place in the box office chart, taking �1.54m.

Last weekend's box office chart-topper, heist movie The Bank Job, fell to fourth place, taking �668,456.

Comedy The Accidental Husband rounded off the top five.

Sci-fi thriller Jumper was number six, one place ahead of comedy Be Kind Rewind.

Vantage Point, the only film to take more than �1m at the weekend, follows an assassination attempt on a fictional US president, played by William Hurt.

The incident, which takes place at a summit in Spain, is replayed eight times, from eight different points of view.

The only other new entry in the chart was In Bruges, which appeared at number 11 on the strength of its release in Ireland.

Starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two London hitmen hiding in Belgium, it is not released in England, Scotland and Wales until 18 April.
