Actor John Bardon could return to EastEnders this summer after making good progress as he recovers from a stroke, the show's producers have said.

Bardon, 68, who plays Jim Branning in the soap, has told EastEnders bosses he is keen to return to Albert Square.

Bardon, who is still regaining walking ability and speech, suffered the stroke in June.

A spokeswoman said Bardon would begin filming in the summer if his recovery went to plan.

"John is doing really well and we're overwhelmed he wants to return," she added.

"Other people who have suffered serious strokes can be given a boost by watching John."

EastEnders writers have temporarily written Bardon's character out of the soap by saying Jim Branning has also had a stroke.

Bardon joined the soap in 1996.

He and co-star June Brown, who plays on-screen wife Dot, have twice won the British Soap Award for best couple.
