Sweeney cuts to top of UK chart

Murder-musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has cut into the UK and Ireland film box office, taking the top spot on its opening weekend.

Johnny Depp stars as the legendary 19th-Century serial killer, with Helena Bonham Carter playing Mrs Lovett.

The production took more than �4.5m in ticket sales, more than four times as much as Alien vs Predator: Requiem.

Romantic drama PS I Love You, starring Hilary Swank, remained at number three on its sixth week in the top 10.

Oscar-nominated No Country For Old Men was fourth.

UK AND IRELAND BOX OFFICE
1. Sweeney Todd - �4.53m
2. Alien vs Predator: Requiem - �954,000
3. PS I Love You - �925,000
4. No Country For Old Men - �828,000
5. St Trinian's - �676,000

St Trinian's was back in the top five after dropping out last week.

The movie, about out-of-control schoolgirls, took �676,000 over the weekend.

However, futuristic thriller I Am Legend has fallen from the top five after six weeks.

It has generated almost �25 million in the UK and Ireland so far.
