Anne Robinson has hosted the show since it began in 2000 |
Anne Robinson's quiz show The Weakest Link will replace Neighbours when the Australian soap opera is dropped from the BBC One schedule. The change means children's shows, such as Blue Peter, will be shown at an earlier time in the afternoon.
The long-running soap will move to Five from 11 February after the BBC pulled out of bidding for the show last year.
The Weakest Link has been one of BBC Two's top series - and a hit around the world - since it first aired in 2000.
A BBC spokesman has insisted that the move would not affect its commitment to showing children's programming.
"We're committed to showing 130 minutes of children's programmes on BBC One," he said.
The Weakest Link has already had some exposure on BBC1 with a number of celebrity-based editions airing on Saturday nights.
Robinson, who has become infamous for her witty put-downs and strict persona on the show, said: "I am told BBC One is ready to take us on full time.
"I hope they know what they are letting themselves in for."
Neighbours has been shown on the BBC since 1986 |
BBC Two controller Roly Keating said: "It's always sad to say goodbye to a much loved show, but it also presents an exciting opportunity for BBC Two to develop new ideas.
"I am in no doubt that Anne and the team will thrive in their new home on BBC One."
Neighbours, which launched the careers of stars including Kylie Minogue and Guy Pearce, first aired on the BBC in 1986.
Former BBC One controller Peter Fincham said he had been asked for 300m over eight years by Fremantle Media - three times the price the corporation had agreed to pay in its last deal.
Both Fremantle and Five are owned by the RTL Group media company.
