Sam Riley, star of recent film Control, and comedy performer Sharon Horgan have been shortlisted for the South Bank Show Awards' breakthrough category. Author Richard Milward, ballet dancer James Forbat and artist Tessa Farmer are also nominated, along with singer Bishi, who is known as DJ Siren.
Actors Tom Hardy and Stephen Wight, soprano Lucy Crowe and violinist Jennifer Pike are in the running too.
Previous winners of the award include Razorlight and Billie Piper.
This year's recipient will be announced on 29 January following a public vote.
And the full awards ceremony - now in its 12th year - is to be shown on ITV1 on 3 February.
Prizes for categories including film, TV drama, visual arts and literature will be handed out.
