| Monday, 17 April, 2000, 16:50 GMT 17:50 UK Ruby slippers up for sale ![]() Judy Garland and friends in The Wizard of Oz A pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz are expected to fetch up to $750,000 (470,000) when they go up for auction next month. The shoes - US size 6b (roughly equivalent to four and-a-half in the UK) - are one of seven or eight pairs made especially for the actress to wear in the 1939 classic. They are said to be in pristine condition. They are one of a number of items of Hollywood memorabilia going under the hammer at Christie's in New York on 24 May.
Other notable artefacts include the cowardly lion outfit worn by Bert Lahr in the same film, a 1937 Rolls Royce Phantom used in the James Bond movie Goldfinger and Christopher Reeve's Superman capes and body stockings. The lion costume could raise $600,000 (375,000), the Rolls Royce will probably be driven off for $200,000 (125,000) and the Superman items are likely to fetch around $40,000 (25,000) each. Christie's have refused to put official sale estimates on the treasures from The Wizard of Oz.
They sold another pair of the ruby slippers back in 1988 for a then-record $150,000 (94,000) and pop art specialist Sarah Hodgson said: "Props from that period are very rare." In the film, Garland's character, Dorothy, acquires the slippers when they magically appear on her feet, following the death of their owner, the Wicked Witch of the East. The witch's sister, the Wicked Witch of the West, does everything in her power to get them back but fails and Dorothy memorably clicks them together to go home, uttering the immortal words: "There's no place like home." |
