SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) is the latest film from Errol Morris, whose Fog Of War won an Oscar in 2004.

Also in competition is Daniel Day-Lewis film There Will Be Blood. Director Paul Thomas Anderson won the festival's top prize for Magnolia in 2004.

The 58th annual festival will run from 7-17 February 2008.

Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad became notorious in April 2004 after images emerged of US troops abusing prisoners.

The footage included naked prisoners placed in humiliating positions and detainees cowering from aggressive dogs.

Eleven soldiers were later convicted of carrying out the abuses.

Massacre film

The Berlin festival will also premiere John Malkovich's latest movie Gardens of the Night, about two children who are abducted and held captive for over nine years.

Meanwhile, Blue Velvet star Isabella Rossellini is to unveil a collection of short films about the sex lives of insects.

The 55-year-old actress will premiere Green Porno, a series she directed and co-produced as "quickies" for mobile phones and mobile video players.

Oscar-winner Andrzej Wajda, who received a lifetime achievement award at the 2006 festival, will showcase his latest film, Katyn, in 2008.

The drama examines the massacre of thousands of Polish prisoners of war by the Soviet secret service in 1940. Wajda's father was one of the victims.

The final selection for the competition programme of the festival will be completed by mid-January 2008.
