More than 30 films have opened in the US in the past two weeks, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Media By Numbers.
"Some of them are the best-reviewed of the year, but it seems audiences are indifferent to them," he said.
The two other new entries in the North American top 10 were sports movie spoof The Comebacks at number six and Disney's 3-D version of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas at eight.
