Fry's documentary on bipolar disorder was shown on the BBC

Wood is up for best actress for her role in Housewife, 49, while Fry's The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive is nominated in the documentary category.

UK TV productions have been nominated for a total of eight awards, including two for BBC One drama The Street.

Winners of the awards, which honour TV produced outside the US, will be revealed on 19 November in New York.

World War II

The 38 nominees in nine categories were announced by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences at a news conference in Cannes, France.

Brazil garnered seven nominations, Japan has four, South Africa has three, while Germany, Denmark, China and the Netherlands all have two each.

Victoria Wood won two Bafta awards for Housewife, 49

Wood, whose ITV drama Housewife, 49, is based on the real World War II diary of Lancashire housewife, will be competing against Brazilian Lilia Cabral for Pages of Life, South African Brenda Ngxoli for Home Affairs, and Muriel Robin for the French production Marie Besnard - The Poisoner.

The Street, which follows the lives of different residents of one street, is nominated for best drama series, while Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent is up for best actor for his role as an embittered pensioner.

Also nominated for best actor were Pierre Bokma for Dutch production The Chosen One, China's Guo Jia Ming for My Own Private Deutschland, and Hong Kong actor Bobby AuYeung Chun Wah for Dicey Business.

Controversial drama

South Africa's Home Affairs was nominated for best drama along with Denmark's The Killing and Brazil's Mothern.

Controversial More4 drama Death of a President, which centres around the fictionalised assassination of US President George W Bush, was nominated in the TV movie/mini-series category, as was Brazilian film Antonia, about a group of four young female rappers.

The other UK nominees were Simon Schama's Power of Art: Bernini, about the Baroque sculptor, for arts programming; and the BBC talent show How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? in the non-scripted entertainment category.

Little Britain Abroad was nominated for comedy, along with Brazil's The Amateurs and Japan's NEO - Office Chuckles.
