Sir Terry originally took over the Radio 2 breakfast show in 1972

Sir Terry, who presents the station's breakfast show, beat The Beatles, who came second, followed by Nelson Mandela and Princess Diana.

Speaking on his morning show he said the title was a "richly deserved accolade" which made him sound like an "old relic".

The poll was held as part of BBC Radio's 40th birthday celebrations.

'Windbag'

"The icon, of course, is a very, very ancient and occasionally revered representation of somebody holy, so I'd just like to thank you all very much," he said on air.

During his show, the 69-year-old DJ read out several comments from listeners.

One asked if he had won the title because he was the "oldest and biggest windbag on Radio 2?"

Another said: "Would you like us to send in the builders to remove the door frames from the BBC so you can get your big head through?"

Sir Terry first presented the Radio 2 breakfast show in 1972 before taking a break to work on TV.
