BBC News in double Emmys triumph

The BBC covered Israeli air strikes on south Lebanon

BBC News has won two International Emmy Awards, including one for its coverage of the Lebanon crisis.

BBC Two's Baghdad: A Doctor's Story took the other award, which was handed out at a ceremony for News and Documentary Emmys in New York.

The documentary, shot by an Iraqi doctor in a Baghdad emergency room, was made by Guardian Films for the BBC.

Veteran US journalist Ted Koppel received a lifetime achievement gong, marking more than 40 years on air.

'Journalistic excellence'

Director of BBC News Helen Boaden said the award for coverage of the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon "recognises the journalistic excellence of BBC News".

Of Baghdad: A Doctor's Story, she said: "It took a lot of nerve here and tremendous bravery on the ground to deliver this extraordinary and memorable film."

Koppel's documentary Iran: The Most Dangerous Nation also won a major award.

The main US news networks, including CBS and CNN, were among the winners with their coverage of world events including the Lebanon crisis, Darfur and Iraq.

But public broadcaster PBS was the major winner of the night, taking home nine awards.

The coverage of the US election night in 2006 on CNN was also recognised at the ceremony.
