Hollywood actor Jason Priestley has been sentenced to five days in prison for a drink-driving offence.

The former Beverly Hills 90210 star decided not to contest a charge of drunken driving stemming from a traffic accident last December.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor also ordered Priestley - who was arrested after crashing his Porsche into a telegraph pole in Hollywood - to serve three years probation and enter a drug and alcohol treatment programme.

He was also told to surrender his driving licence for a year.

The Canadian-born actor, who is currently free on $50,000 (31,000) bail, did not attend the hearing.

"It worked out well, considering," said Peter Knecht, Priestley's lawyer. "I'm happy with the result, and so is he."

The 30-year-old had been charged with two felony counts - causing injury while driving under the influence and driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit - and could have faced up to three years in state prison if convicted.

Priestley was not hurt in the accident but his passenger, 27-year-old Chad Cook, suffered a broken arm.

At the time, Priestley told police that he had swerved to avoid a deer in the road.

West End role

Priestley is currently starring at London's Apollo Theatre in a production of the hit Broadway play Side Man. It is due to run until 6 May.

Side Man marks Priestley's West End debut and his return to the stage following a 10-year absence.

His film credits include Love and Death on Long Island, Tombstone and Eye of the Beholder.
