The Proms are now in their 113th year

The first night included Beethoven's Choral Symphony, which was cancelled last year after a fire at the venue.

The summer event is now in its 113th season, and is marking the 80th anniversary of the BBC's involvement.

This year's two-month line-up also includes music inspired by William Shakespeare, a musical about climate change and West End star Michael Ball.

The season culminates on 8 September with the traditional Last Night concert, which will be conducted by the BBC Symphony Orchestra's Jiri Belohlavek for the first time.

Asian fusion

The Proms In The Park events are set to take the climax around the UK, with outdoor concerts in London's Hyde Park, Carrickfergus Castle in Northern Ireland, plus Swansea, Glasgow and the Tees Valley.

The Shakespeare and Music theme includes 20 Proms events featuring works by 25 composers inspired by the Bard.

Michael Ball will perform at the Royal Albert Hall

They will include Verdi's Macbeth and Bernstein's West Side Story.

The musical drama about climate change, The Water Diviner, is inspired by Hurricane Katrina and tells the story of a group of children lost after a storm sweeps away their homes.

It is the work of acclaimed film composer Rachel Portman, who won an Oscar for her 1997 film score for Emma.

There will also be an evening of orchestral performance presented by Asian fusion artist Nitin Sawhney, inspired by the 60th anniversary of Indian partition.

Jazz stars Dame Cleo Laine and Sir John Dankworth will celebrate their 80th birthdays with performances during the season.
