A BBC spokeswoman said: "The driver was fully insured and had received special training for staff working on motoring programmes.

"But unfortunately, the driver was unable to prevent the car going into a skid."

Lamborghini spokesman James Pillar said that although it was too early to assess the cost of the repairs, there was "not a significant amount of damage" to the car.

"It will be covered by the BBC insurance policy. The accident is small fry compared to some of the things they take on loan," he said.

He said the company would remain involved with the new programme, which is due for transmission over the summer.
