The Kaiser Chiefs recorded Getting Better for the Radio 2 session

Oasis, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, Bryan Adams and The Magic Numbers were among those who took part.

Geoff Emerick - the engineer in charge of the original 1967 sessions - used the same equipment to record the new versions.

The recording sessions will be aired on Radio 2 on 2 June.

The programme, which was recorded in two parts, hears from the artists about the importance of the album.

The second part will be broadcast 16 June.

'Influential'

Emerick used the original analogue 4-track equipment to demonstrates the techniques employed for the recording at Abbey Road studios back in 1967.

Solo artist Adams recorded the title track, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The singer said the album was one of the most "influential" records as he is "still drawn to the songs today".

He added: "Those songs that they have on that album are beautifully crafted, beautifully recorded and we'll never get close to that."

Razorlight performed the track With A Little Help From My Friends, The Fray covered Fixing A Hole with the Magic Numbers playing She's Leaving Home.

Getting Better was sung by the Kaiser Chiefs.

Speaking of the original recordings, lead singer Ricky Wilson said: "I do think because you had to work a lot harder for it, the results were a lore more astonishing."

Dogs home

BBC 6 Music has also commemorated the anniversary by looking at some of the myths that surround the album.

Items include a trip to Battersea Dogs Home to find out if the group really did record sounds only audible to dogs on the out groove of the album.

An interview with Lucy Vodden who went to school with John Lennon's son Julian will also be broadcast.

Lennon said the song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, was inspired by a picture his son did of her in class, and not the drug LSD.
