| Monday, 28 February, 2000, 11:35 GMT Beach's box office bombshell ![]() The Beach fails to make a splash at the box office Heart-throb Leonardo DiCaprio's new film The Beach has dropped out of the Top 10 movie chart in America - just three weeks after its release. Despite a blaze of publicity, early US box office figures for the weekend suggest that the film, about a backpacker's doomed search for paradise in Thailand, made just $3.5m (2.2m) - slipping to number 11.
The Bruce Willis mob comedy The Whole Nine Yards topped the charts for the second week, selling $9.6m (6m) worth of tickets. A spokesman for 20th Century Fox, the film's distributor, was philosophical about news, noting that it was shaping up as an international hit. The Beach debuted at number two in the US box office, pulling in $15.3m (9.5m) during its opening weekend. By last week it had dropped to seventh place, making $7m (4.4m). Over its first 17 days of release - two full weeks plus a third weekend - its total is $33.9m (21.2m). By contrast, the unheralded teen comedy Snow Day, which stars Chevy Chase and opened at the same time, pulled in $43.3m (27m) for Paramount. Toy Story 2 beat The Beach during its opening weekend in the UK and it was still at number two last week. Based on Alex Garland's cult book and made by Danny Boyle and the team behind Shallow Grave and Trainspotting, The Beach has had mixed reviews. It has also suffered from its "R" rating in the US, which bans under-17s from seeing it without an adult. In the UK it carries a 15 rating. Beach sounds a hit There was some good news for The Beach though, as All Saints held on to the top spot in the British charts on Sunday with their single Pure Shores, which went straight to number one last week.
The song, which features on the soundtrack of The Beach, held off a strong challenge from dance act Artful Dodger, whose Movin' Too Fast - which features vocalist Romina Johnson - entered the charts at number two. The Backstreet Boys, fresh from a Grammy music award performance with Elton John, entered at number three with Show Me The Meaning of Love. Sales of Pure Shores are thought to have topped 100,000 for the week. Added to a strong opening week turnover of 150,000, it brings All Saints within throwing distance of a silver disc - and almost guarantees them an eventual gold. The Beach's soundtrack album album sold over 200,000 in its first week on release, putting it at number one on the UK's compilation chart on Sunday. |
