American Idol star Carrie Underwood has scored a double win at the Country Music Television awards in Nashville.

The singer picked up video of the year and female video of the year for her revenge anthem Before He Cheats.

Director Roman White also won a prize for the video, which sees Underwood smashing up a car with a baseball bat.

Kenny Chesney was awarded best male video for You Save Me, while Rascal Flatts topped the group video category with What Hurts The Most.

17-year-old Taylor Swift captured the breakthrough video prize for her hit single Tim McGraw.

The song tells the story of a couple who fall in love to a McGraw song, break up and are reminded of each other whenever they hear the tune.

Johnny Cash's daughter Rosanne presented the Johnny Cash Visionary Award to Kris Kristofferson.

The singer-songwriter paid tribute to Cash backstage, telling reporters: "He stood up for me when a lot of people didn't".

Comedian Jeff Foxworthy hosted the show, and paid tribute to the 32 victims of the shootings at Virginia Tech university.

"We want those people to know in the days and weeks going forward that you are going to be in the hearts and minds of everyone in the country music community," he said.
