American football's Super Bowl achieved the third-highest audience in US television history on Sunday.

The CBS broadcast of the Indianapolis Colts' victory over the Chicago Bears, from Miami, averaged more than 93 million viewers.

Only the 1996 Super Bowl, with over 94 million, and the last episode of the sitcom Mash in 1983, seen by about 106 million, have drawn more US viewers.

The half-time show by pop singer Prince earned positive reviews.

The Associated Press called the performance "one of the best Super Bowl half-time shows - ever", while the New York Post said it was "polished and proficient".

The interval shows have come under scrutiny since Janet Jackson caused outrage in 2004 by exposing her breast during a routine with Justin Timberlake.

The Federal Communications Commission fined CBS $550,000 (280,000) over the incident.

Last year, the Rolling Stones were censored during their slot over some lyrics deemed sexually explicit.

Nielsen Media Research estimates that 140 million Americans tuned in to all or part of the match on Sunday, which the Indianapolis Colts won 29-17.
