Ghost horror tops US box office

The Messengers is the first English-language film by the Pang brothers
Horror movie The Messengers has gone to the top of the North American box office chart on its opening weekend, according to studio estimates.

The ghost story, made by Hong Kong brothers Oxide and Danny Pang, took $14.5m (�7.4m) from Friday to Sunday.

Because I Said So, a comedy starring Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore, opened in second place, taking $13m (�6.6m).

Last week's number one, comedy spoof Epic Movie, was third in the chart, with receipts of $8.2m (�4.2m).

Ben Stiller's comedy Night at the Museum was fourth with $6.8m (�3.5m), ahead of gangster film Smokin' Aces.

Oscar contenders Dreamgirls, Pan's Labyrinth, The Pursuit of Happyness and The Queen all maintained positions in the top 10.

The top 12 films took $71.6m (�36.5m), down 12.5% on the same weekend last year.
