| Friday, 4 February, 2000, 12:30 GMT Scotty to beam up a baby ![]() Actor James Doohan proud 'father-to-be' Star Trek veteran James Doohan is preparing to boldly go where few men of his age have gone before - into fatherhood. It is reported that the 79-year-old, who played chief engineer Scotty in the cult 60s science fiction TV series, and six Star Trek films, is to be a father again. Doohan and his 43-year-old wife Wende, who already have two sons aged 23 and 21, are expecting their new baby in April. The actor, who celebrates his 80th birthday on 3 March, already has four children from previous marriages. Family record Fathering children in old age ran in his family - his grandfather was 72 when his mother was born. He told the Daily Mail: "I thought it was incredible, but now I'm going to beat the family record.
Doohan, who met Wende 25 years ago when she asked him for an autographed photograph, says he's not daunted by the birth. "I'm a little slower than I used to be, but I don't have any aches or pains and we're planning to give the baby all the love in the world." Canadian-born Doohan, who still acts in TV, films and commercials, shot to fame as engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in 1966, when the original Star Trek series was launched. A former Captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery and D-Day veteran, he was given an honorary degree in engineering by the Milkwaukee School of Engineering where apparently half of the students polled said they were inspired to study engineering by his role in Star Trek. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
