Channel 4 pulls racism row repeat
Female contestants on Shipwrecked
Lucy Buchanan (far right) has been described as "naive"
Channel 4 has pulled a repeat of the first episode of Shipwrecked which prompted more than 500 complaints after a contestant backed slavery.

A spokeswoman said the move was to ensure contestants' welfare "in the context of heightened media comment".

Contestant Lucy Buchanan, 18, was shown saying black people were "really bad" and condemning multi-cultural Britain.

This followed thousands of complaints about alleged racist bullying on the channel's Celebrity Big Brother.

The spokeswoman said: "Channel 4 has taken the decision not to repeat the first episode of Shipwrecked in order to ensure, in the context of heightened media comment, the ongoing welfare of all the contributors taking part."

The channel will show the second episode of the new series in the Saturday morning repeat slot, and again in the show's regular Sunday evening slot.

'Naive'

In episode one, Buchanan was shown saying : "I don't like fat people, I don't really like really ugly people, I don't like it when foreigners come into this country and they don't take on British culture and British values.

"I'm for the British Empire and things. I'm for slavery, but that's never going to come back."

About 540 people complained to media regulator Ofcom about the programme.

Channel 4 said Buchanan was naive, and sought to defuse the row by releasing footage from later programmes showing her taking back earlier statements.

This followed more than 40,000 complaints to Ofcom over the alleged victimisation of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty on Celebrity Big Brother.
