Blanchett was Oscar nominated for her role in the first film |
The Golden Age, the British sequel to the 1998 Oscar nominated movie Elizabeth, will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. The film sees Cate Blanchett reprise her role as the Virgin Queen, opposite Clive Owen as Sir Walter Raleigh and Samantha Morton as Mary Queen of Scots.
Shekhar Kapur returns as director, alongside Geoffrey Rush as the Queen's close advisor Sir Francis Walsingham.
The Canadian festival, now in its 32nd year, runs from 6-15 September.
Toronto joins Berlin, Venice and Cannes as one of the key festivals in the film calendar, and is widely regarded as the North American launch-pad for Oscar contenders.
Spanish challenge
The Golden Age centres on the challenge to Elizabeth's rule by the Spanish king Philip II and the threat of the Spanish Armada.
Filmed in the UK, it is due to be released in the US on 12 October and the UK on 2 November.
Fugitive Pieces, based on Anne Michaels' best-selling novel, will open the annual festival, while the Coen brothers' No Country For Old Men is among the films receiving its North American premiere at the event.
The Last King of Scotland, which went on to win the best actor Oscar for Forest Whittaker in February, was among the high profile films to premiere at the festival last year.
