Adventure movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest has sold nearly five million copies on its first day of release in the US. The film was the highest grossing release of 2006, taking more than $1bn (508m) at the box office.
It is expected to overtake the first part of the Pirates trilogy, Curse of the Black Pearl, as the best selling live action DVD ever, Disney says.
The top DVD of all time is Finding Nemo which sold about 27 million copies.
This success means that Disney's Buena Vista Worldwide Home Entertainment could have the three best-selling DVDs for 2006, a Disney spokesman said.
The top DVD sellers for 2006 now include Disney-Pixar's Cars, with 13 million DVDs sold and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, with sales of 12 million.
Dead Man's Chest has already enjoyed similar demand in the UK, selling 1.5 million copies a week after its November release.
