David Letterman's Late Show is one of the big draws on YouTube |
A major US television network says having shows broadcast on YouTube has boosted its core ratings. In the month since CBS signed a deal with the video website, it has uploaded over 300 clips which have been viewed a total of 29.2m times.
At the same time, CBS says ratings for David Letterman's talk show rose by 200,000 viewers, a five per cent rise.
Three clips posted by the network have made YouTube's top 25 most viewed videos chart.
A joint statement from the two companies said that while the success of shows on YouTube was not the sole cause of the rise, both believe it has brought a significant new audience of viewers to each broadcast.
Kevin Donahue, Vice President of Content for YouTube, said: "CBS has done a phenomenal job at engaging and interacting with the YouTube community and we're pleased that this has brought new viewers to their broadcasts.
"It's been great watching our community respond so strongly and positively to their entertaining content."
