The Stooges and Iggy Pop went their separate ways in 1974

The 59-year-old reunited with Ron and Scott Asheton for the project, while bass player Mike Watt has taken over from original member Dave Alexander.

He told Billboard magazine how working with the Asheton brothers again had bought back mixed feelings.

"Some of it is exciting and some of it is scary," he said. The album, called Weirdness, will be released in March.

Heroin addiction

The veteran rock star insists they have all worked very hard on the music.

"There's a great deal of structure and attention to detail," he said.

"We were very prepared, and we always have been any time we stepped into a studio," he added.

Raw Power, the last studio album by The Stooges, came out in 1973.

At the time Iggy was battling his heroin addiction, but he went on to launch a solo career with the help of singer David Bowie.

Back in August 2003, Iggy and the band had planned to play a gig together in their home city of Detroit.

However fans were left disappointed after the concert was cancelled due to a series of power failures across eastern US and Canada.
