Mercury Prize nominees Bloc Party have cancelled the remainder of their North American tour after drummer Matt Tong suffered a collapsed lung.

The 27-year-old was taken to hospital in Atlanta last week when he felt unwell during a concert.

Doctors have advised him not to travel or perform for "another few weeks" so he can recover properly.

The band have been touring with Panic! at the Disco, who will continue to perform on the 19 remaining dates.

But Bloc Party fans can request refunds from the outlet which sold them tickets, the group said in a statement.

"We would like to apologise to all of our fans here who won't be able to see us on this tour," said Tong's bandmate Kele Okereke.

"We were looking forward to playing in a number of American cities that we've never been to before. However, Matt's health is our number one priority right now."

The band had already played dates in Toronto, Rochester, Lowell and Philadelphia, with cities including Chicago, Denver, Seattle and Vancouver lined up over the coming month.
