Joe Jagger attended his son's investiture in 2003

Joe Jagger was admitted to hospital in Surrey last week after a fall in his home, and died on Saturday night.

Sir Mick, who was in the US for the Stones' A Bigger Bang world tour, flew into Britain on Friday to spend time with his father.

He later flew back to Las Vegas, where he performed with the group, a spokesman for the singer said.

He added that the family would not be making any further comment at this stage and that arrangements would be made for a private funeral.

Mr Jagger, a former PE teacher, initially disapproved of his son's career choice, particularly after he dropped out of a degree course at the London School of Economics to pursue music.

But in 2003 he proudly attended Sir Mick's investiture at Buckingham Palace.

He lived close to Sir Mick's mansion in Richmond, south-west London, with his wife Eva until her death in 2000 shortly before their 60th wedding anniversary.

At his mother's funeral service, the Rolling Stones frontman joined his brother to perform the gospel song Will The Circle Be Unbroken?
