Actor Daniel Baldwin, who co-starred in the TV series Homicide: Life on the Street, has been arrested in California on suspicion of car theft.

The 46-year-old was detained on suspicion of stealing a sports utility vehicle belonging to an acquaintance.

Mr Baldwin made the news in July when he crashed his car on a busy Los Angeles street after being witnessed driving at more than 80 mph (128 kph).

He is the brother of fellow actors Alec, Stephen and William Baldwin.

"The car belongs to an acquaintance of Mr Baldwin, but he had no permission to take it," said Jim Amormino, a spokesman for California's Orange County sheriff's department.

Baldwin's other acting credits include the film Car 54, Where Are You?

He also appeared in the US version of reality TV show Celebrity Fit Club.
