Shania's top of the pops

Radio star: Shania Twain had 1999's most-played single

Shania Twain's song That Don't Impress Me Much was the most-played song on UK radio stations in 1999.

The Canadian country singer, who won two prizes at the American Music Awards on Monday, heads the Top 10 compiled by monitoring outfit Music Control.

The track, which was played 46,371 times during the year, did not reach number one, but stayed in the charts for months.

Almost 2,000 plays behind Twain's hit was Madonna's Beautiful Stranger, from the Austin Powers film The Spy Who Shagged Me.

Britney Spears' Baby One More Time was third in a chart which only contained three UK-based acts.

George Michael was fourth with As, his duet with US R 'n' B singer Mary J Blige. Robbie Williams' hit Strong was seventh. The only other homegrown act in the list, Jamiroquai, came tenth with Canned Heat.

Irish band The Corrs are at number nine, but the Top 10 was dominated by acts from the US or Canada.

Music Control monitors radio stations and local broadcasters to record the number of plays each track gets, and the size of the audience they reach.

The figures show that although Shania Twain's song had the most plays, Madonna was heard by more people because of the larger listenerships of the stations which played Beautiful Stranger.

Britney Spears' Baby One More Time was the UK's best-selling single of 1999.
