Musical movie Perhaps Love leads the nominations for the 43rd Golden Horse Awards, the Chinese-speaking world's equivalent of the Oscars. The film has 12 nominations including best film, best director for Hong Kong film-maker Peter Chan and best actress for China's Zhou Xun.
The other best picture contenders are After This Our Exile, Crazy Stone, Exiled and Silk.
The awards ceremony is in the Taiwan capital Taipei on 25 November.
Perhaps Love tells the story of a film star (Zhou) torn between past and present lovers.
After This Our Exile also earned nominations for best original screenplay, best actor for Aaron Kwok and best supporting actor for Goum Ian Iskandar.
The film is Hong Kong director Patrick Tam's first for 17 years.
Heist movie Crazy Stone, which has drawn comparisons with US film Ocean's Eleven, is nominated for Ning Hao's direction and its screenplay.
Exiled and Silk have best director nominations for, respectively, Johnnie To and Su Chao-pin.
