Bad vibrations rock Beach Boys
The Beach Boys in 1988: Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, Brian Wilson and Mike Love
A judge in the US has temporarily barred Al Jardine, a former guitarist with the Beach Boys, from performing under the band's name until a legal case is resolved.

Jardine, 59, is being sued by the band's former lead singer Mike Love and Brother Records after calling his new group, Beach Boys Family and Friends.

Brother Records holds the trademark to the Beach Boys name and has licensed Mike Love's new band, but not Al Jardine's.

Brother Records and Love claim Jardine has been using the Beach Boys name without authorisation and ignored strict standards designed to maintain the group's image of "cars, surf, girls and fun".

Last year more than 1,700 Florida fans demanded their money back after showing up to find Jardine's band - rather than the original Beach Boys - performing, according to Love's lawyer Edwin McPherson.

"That caused a lot of problems... and hurt the Beach Boys' name," said McPherson.

Jardine, in turn claims that Love is trying to deceive the public into believing that his Beach Boys are the genuine article.

"It is simply false to imply that a band with one original founding member of the Beach Boys, Mike Love, is the same band as the original Beach Boys with five founding members," said Jardine in court papers.

Family affair

Jardine's group, Beach Boys Family and Friends, includes his two sons and the two daughters of another founding band member, Brian Wilson.

The Beach Boys were founded in 1961 by Mike Love, his three cousins Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson and Brian's schoolfriend Al Jardine.

The California group had huge hits with songs such as I Get Around, Good Vibrations, Help Me Rhonda and Surfin' USA.

They were inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 but split after Carl Wilson's death in 1998.
