The World Is Not Enough may be raking in the box office takings, but BBC News Online users think Goldfinger - the third oldest Bond movie - still has the edge.
His latest work, undertaken by Pierce Brosnan with female sidekicks Denise Richards and Sophie Marceau, came in at a lowly 12th place, with only 55 giving it their vote. In fact, overall BBC News Online users gave a resounding chorus of allegiance to Bond's earliest outings. Hot on the heels of the action-packed Goldfinger - in which Bond comes up against Gert Frobe's madman with the Midas touch - was its 1963 predecessor From Russia With Love, earning 179 votes. In third place, with 131 votes, was the 007 movie originally considered to be Connery's last, You Only Live Twice, from 1967.
But fans of the fifth and current Bond can take heart. Brosnan has only three 007 films under his belt but the first two, GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies, proved more popular than most of the seven completed by the longest-serving Bond Roger Moore. Moore's first time as the British agent in Live And Let Die came in joint fifth with GoldenEye with 109 votes. The man who put the buffoonery into Bond only makes another appearance in the top 10 with The Spy Who Loved Me at eight. Still, he fared marginally better than the fourth holder of the title Timothy Dalton. The Living Daylights scored a meagre 47 votes, while Licence To Kill came in penultimate place with 38. Meanwhile, in a telephone poll conducted by the BBC's teletext service Ceefax, Sean Connery was voted best Bond by 46% of viewers, with Brosnan following on 31%. Roger Moore was third with 14% of votes, followed by Timothy Dalton (7%) and George Lazenby (2%). Full BBC News Online poll results Goldfinger - 427 (23.72%) From Russia With Love -179 (9.95%) You Only Live Twice - 131 (7.27%) On Her Majesty's Secret Service - 111 (6.16%) Goldeneye and Live & Let Die - both 109 (6.05%) Dr No - 105 The Spy Who Loved Me - 83 Diamonds Are Forever and Thunderball - 65 Tomorrow Never Dies - 63 The World Is Not Enough - 55 The Living Daylights - 47 For Your Eyes Only - 43 The Man With The Golden Gun - 42 Moonraker - 41 Octopussy - 40 Licence To Kill - 38 A View To A Kill - 27 |
