Broadcaster Five is to attempt live coverage of a natural birth for a primetime audience. A number of expectant mothers are being followed for the two-hour show from Nottingham on Sunday, and it is hoped one baby will be delivered on-air.
A "comprehensive" guide to childbirth and footage of a new Caesarean section technique will also be featured.
"Live TV works best when you capture raw emotion in dramatic circumstances," said executive producer Elaine Hackett.
"What better event to be at than the birth of a baby."
The show will be presented by Gabby Logan at the maternity unit in the Queen's Medical Centre.
Sharing stories
It will also tell the stories of some of the babies born in the days leading up to the live broadcast.
Celebrities including writer and comedian Meera Syal and former model Nancy Sorrell - who is married to comedian Vic Reeves and had twins earlier this year - will also share their experiences.
In 2001, five babies were born on live television in the United States.
The ABC network devoted its breakfast programme to expectant mothers, dubbing the show Super Baby Tuesday.
That day was picked because statistically it was the time of the week when most births occurred in that country.
