An animated comedy which features Billy Connolly as the leader of a group of angry squirrels has debuted at number one at the North American box office. Open Season took an estimated $23m (�12.2m) on its opening weekend, with the comedian playing McSquizzy, who barks orders in a Scottish accent.
Kevin Costner's action thriller The Guardian entered in second place, generating $17.7m (�9.5m).
And last week's leader, Jackass: Number Two, fell to third with $14m (�7.5m).
The third new entry in the top 10 was School for Scoundrels, in fourth place.

Open Season sees celebrities Martin Lawrence, Ashton Kutcher and Debra Messing playing a grizzly bear, a mule deer and a forest ranger respectively.
The talking animal characters are in danger and must find a safe place to stay because the start of the hunting season is close.
