Mariah up for more music awards
Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey won three awards at this year's Grammys
Pop singer Mariah Carey is one of four acts up for three prizes at this year's American Music Awards.

The Black Eyed Peas, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nickelback will also be in contention at the annual event, to be held in Los Angeles on 21 November.

Carey led the field at last year's ceremony with four nominations - but took home just one award on the night.

Rapper Eminem, actor-singer Jamie Foxx, pop group Pussycat Dolls and soul star Mary J Blige are also up for awards.

Billed as a more populist version of the Grammys, the American Music Awards (AMAs) are decided by a poll of 20,000 music fans.

Big sellers

The nominations - determined by radio airplay and record sales - were announced on Tuesday by actors Tyrese Gibson and Carmen Electra.

Carey, who was named favourite soul/R&B female artist in 2005, is up for the same award again this year.

She is also shortlisted for favourite pop/rock female artist and favourite pop/rock album.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers won two awards last year but were one of several acts not to attend the event.

Held at LA's Shrine Auditorium, the show featured performances from Gwen Stefani and The Eurythmics.
