A man has been arrested after allegedly impersonating an American federal agent in an attempt to work for movie stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Nelson Mercado, from Los Angeles, is said to have approached the couple's security firm claiming to work for the US Department of Homeland Security.
Prosecutors said it was not yet clear what motivated Mr Mercado, 46, who had high-profile security experience.
If convicted he could face up to three years in prison, they added.
Assistant US Attorney Brett Sagel said: "Impersonation of a federal agent is serious, no matter what it's for.
"In this case you don't know what his motive or rationale was, but obviously it could have serious repercussions."
Mr Sagel said Mr Mercado carried phoney Homeland Security Department credentials and drove a car with tinted windows and police-style lighting which was fraudulently registered to the Deptartment of Homeland Security.
Representatives for Pitt, 42, and Jolie, 31, were made aware of the situation, Mr Sagel said, but it was not clear if the actors themselves were told.
