McGowan made a return to dramatic acting in Mayo |
Comedian Alistair McGowan is to make his Royal Shakespeare Company debut in the world premiere of Merry Wives - The Musical at Stratford in December. The impressionist, who has also appeared in Mayo and Bleak House, will star opposite Dame Judi Dench.
McGowan will play jealous husband Frank Ford in the production, a musical version of The Merry Wives Of Windsor.
Director Gregory Doran said it would be a "celebratory, seasonal contribution" to the RSC's Complete Works Festival.
"Merry Wives was written at the request of Queen Elizabeth I in two weeks, so has always tended to be regarded as more of an entertainment than a finely crafted or poetic play," he added.
"This makes it ideal for adapting."
The cast also includes Alexandra Gilbreath, currently starring in the ITV drama Life Begins, and Scarlett Strallen, who played the lead role in the West End production of Mary Poppins.
The RSC's Complete Works is a year-long festival, which began in April, staging Shakespeare's sonnets, poems and all 37 plays.
