US rock band Panic! at the Disco have won video of the year at the MTV Video Music Awards, beating big names such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Madonna. James Blunt collected top male video and best cinematography for You're Beautiful, with Because of You by Kelly Clarkson earning the female award.
Colombian singer Shakira had seven nominations but won just one award - best choreography for Hips Don't Lie.
Actor Jack Black hosted the ceremony at New York's Radio City Music Hall.
Madonna left empty-handed, despite nominations in five categories, including video of the year and best female video.

The best pop video award went to Stupid Girls by Pink, who was up against Madonna, Shakira, Nelly Furtado and Christina Aguilera.
Madonna also lost the race for best dance video, won by the Pussycat Dolls for Buttons.
Beyonce won best R&B video for Check On It, while AFI received the best rock video trophy for Miss Murder.
The best group video award went to All-American Rejects, who were up against Gnarls Barkley, Panic! at the Disco, Fall Out Boy and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Peter Wentz from Fall Out Boy - who won the viewers' choice trophy - arrived with a small black and white monkey on his shoulder.
The rock band beat Shakira and former American Idol contestant Clarkson to the viewers' prize, with MTV saying some 40 million votes were cast in that category.

And best new artist went to Californian rockers Avenged Sevenfold for their video for Bat Country. The awards - held in the year of MTV's 25th anniversary - returned to New York after two years in Miami.
But there was drama when a man jumped up from the audience as Panic! at the Disco walked to the stage to collect their video of the year prize.
He grabbed the microphone from one of the band members and introduced himself as "Six", saying: "MTV never gave me my own show."
He failed to snatch the trophy from Jennifer Lopez, who was presenting the award, before being removed by security.
