More than 20 million viewers in the UK saw Italy win the World Cup Final on penalties, with most choosing the BBC over ITV1's simultaneous coverage. During normal time, viewing figures for the match averaged 11.2 million on BBC One, compared with 2.4 million on ITV1.
During the penalty shoot-out, however, BBC One's audience rose to 17 million, with 3.5 million watching ITV1.
Earlier on BBC One, an audience of 7.1 million at its peak saw Roger Federer win the Wimbledon men's singles final.
In a good weekend of ratings for the main BBC channel, more than 8 million viewers tuned in to see Billie Piper's final appearance in Doctor Who on Saturday.
The last episode in the current series of the popular sci-fi drama was watched by an average of 7.7 million, with 8.3 million watching its final third.
That represents an increase on the peak audience of 6.9 million who saw the last episode of the first series starring Christopher Eccleston in June 2005.
To date, however, no episode has bettered Eccleston's first Doctor Who show, seen by 10.8 million at its peak in March last year.
