Thomas says he aims for continuity on the programme

Ceri Thomas told The Guardian that addressing the line-up of presenters, which includes John Humphrys and Sarah Montague, was not a priority.

Mr Thomas was BBC radio newsgathering editor before being appointed as editor of the flagship news show in March.

He also rejected any suggestion that Today had gone soft on government following the Hutton inquiry.

Mr Thomas said he was satisfied with his inherited team of presenters, made up of Humphrys, James Naughtie, Montague, Edward Stourton and Carolyn Quinn.

He told the newspaper: "To be honest, the whole presenter thing - although I knew it would come up from the outside as being one of the key priorities - simply isn't a priority for me because I don't see any great urgency to it."

He said he would not rule out confrontational interviews, some of which have been the subject of complaints from listeners.
