Sheehan (r) said Iraq was "a war based on lies" |
REM's Michael Stipe, musician Moby and actress Susan Sarandon have appeared at a benefit concert in New York urging the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. "I was raised by peace activists," said Moby at the Bring 'Em Home Now! event, held on the third anniversary of the Iraq invasion.
Anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan - whom Sarandon said she hopes to play in an upcoming film - spoke at the concert.
Proceeds will go to Veterans For Peace and Iraq Veterans Against The War.
Organisers said 3,000 tickets were sold for the event, which included performances from Fischerspooner, Peaches and Rufus Wainwright.
"It's awesome to me because there are more and more kids getting involved," Sarandon told reporters.
The actress added she was in talks to play Ms Sheehan, whose son Casey was killed in Iraq in 2004, in an upcoming biopic.
'Harmony and healing'
"I admire her work and we're working together to tell the story," said Sheehan.
Anti-war sentiment was also seen in Peru on Monday as rock guitarist Carlos Santana spoke out against President Bush during a visit to the South American country.

"I have wisdom, I feel love, I love in the present and I try to present a dimension that brings harmony and healing," said the 58-year-old. "My concept is the opposite of George W Bush." Speaking to Peruvian journalists ahead of a concert in Lima on Tuesday, Santana said opposition to the war in Iraq resembled the anti-Vietnam sentiment of the 1970s.
"There is more value in placing a flower in a rifle barrel than making war," he said. "As Jimi Hendrix used to say, musical notes have more importance than bullets."
Santana - who was barred from performing in Peru in 1971 by its military regime - received the Medal of Lima from the city's mayor, Luis Castaneda Lossio.
