Lost For Words, in which she appeared as Pete Postelthwaite's mother struggling to cope after a stroke, is up for the Best Drama Award at the International Emmy Awards.

The 88-year-old's role in the Yorkshire TV film has also won her a nomination for the Most Popular Actress title at the National Television Awards next week.

Flying the flag

British entries figure in six of the seven categories of the 27th annual awards, which will be held in New York on 22 November.

Born in the USSR - 14 UP, made by Granada for the BBC, has been nominated in the Documentary section, while a Swedish production of The Sleeping Beauty - made in association with the BBC - features in the Performing Arts category.

Channel 4 programmes received four nominations, including one in the News section for the Dispatches programme, A Witness To Murder.

Sky News's Kosovo - Liberation Day is also shortlisted in the same category.

The Channel 4 all-woman comedy show Smack The Pony is nominated in the Popular Arts category.

British broadcasters swept the board at last year's International Emmys, winning three out of six prizes on offer.

The Vicar of Dibley episode Love And Marriage won the popular arts Emmy for producers Tiger Aspect Productions, who make the show for BBC One.

British success in the nominations comes at a time when the judging panel has been encouraging non-English-speaking countries to submit entries.
