The Killers head US Download bill
The Killers
The Killers' debut album, Hot Fuss, has won them many awards
Electro-rock band The Killers will headline the first Download Festival to be held in the US.

The event, which will be held on 8 October in California, will follow the UK version, showcasing interactive media and technology.

The Killers' debut album, Hot Fuss, has sold 2.2 million copies in the US and brought them wide acclaim in Europe.

Joining them on the bill are Doves, Modest Mouse and The Arcade Fire, with tickets going on sale on 31 July.

Second album

This year's UK version of the event, held over three days in Donnington Park, Derby, drew a crowd of 150,000 people to see bands including Black Sabbath, Feeder and Billy Idol.

The US version hopes to replicate the commercial success of its British counterpart, with a line-up geared to appeal to a wide audience.

The Killers have been touring for more than 18 months, including gigs at Glastonbury and London's Live 8 concert in Hyde Park in July.

The Download concert is expected to be their last performance for a while, as the band prepares to begin work on their second album.
