Leo Sayer tipped for chart glory

Leo Sayer is hoping for a career revival
Seventies pop star Leo Sayer could have a number one hit on his hands, 29 years after he last topped the UK chart.

A dance remix of his 1977 record, Thunder In My Heart, is expected to make the top three at least, following its release on Monday.

The original single only made it to number 22, although his ballad When I Need You took the number one spot earlier that year.

Dance DJ Meck remixed the track after finding it in a second-hand shop.

"It absolutely blew me away," said Meck, who bought the original track in Los Angeles.

"Lyrically it is so heartfelt and angst-ridden. You probably think of two or three records he did that people unfortunately think of as being a bit naff or not cool. This is so not that Leo Sayer."

The single is receiving good airplay thanks to BBC Radio 1 DJ Pete Tong and has also made BBC Radio 2's playlist.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: "It's a quiet week for new releases so it could well make number one."

Sayer, who said in 2004 that he would leave the UK for Australia because his musical talents were not recognised, is delighted.

"It's been a blast. I'm really fired up at the moment and can't wait to get back on stage again," he said.

Sayer's other hits include Long Tall Glasses, One Man Band and You Make Me Feel Like Dancing.
