Shields plays Roxie Hart in the hit West End musical |
US actress Brooke Shields is to star in the Broadway production of Chicago once her run in the London show ends. Shields joins the New York company at the Ambassador Theatre on 9 September. Her three-month stint in the UK production comes to an end on 30 July.
The 40-year-old star of Suddenly Susan and The Blue Lagoon last performed on Broadway in the musical Wonderful Town.
She had previously appeared as Rizzo in Grease, as Sally Bowles in Cabaret and in the off-Broadway show Exonerated.
'Ridiculous rant'
Shields made headlines earlier this year when she was publicly criticised by actor Tom Cruise for revealing she took drugs for post-natal depression after giving birth to daughter Rowan Francis in 2003.
"To suggest that I was wrong to take drugs to deal with my depression... shows an utter lack of understanding about postpartum depression and childbirth in general," she wrote in the New York Times.
"If any good can come of Mr Cruise's ridiculous rant, let's hope that it gives much-needed attention to a serious disease," added the actress.
Shields had described her post-childbirth experiences in her book Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression.
