Cinderella Man competes with War of the Worlds at the box office |
Relatively few film fans have asked for refunds after watching Russell Crowe's new movie Cinderella Man, according to cinemas giving a money-back guarantee. US chains Cinemark and AMC offered refunds to dissatisfied fans to boost box office takings for the boxing film.
Cinemark said "a couple of dozen" US cinemagoers asked for the cost of their tickets back while AMC said 100 people wanted a refund.
The film has taken $54m (30m) at the US box office in the past five weeks.
Folk hero
This was boosted by a further $3m (1.7m) over the 4 July holiday weekend.
Directed by Ron Howard, Cinderella Man stars Crowe as Depression-era fighter and folk hero Jim Braddock, with co-star Rene Zellweger.
"The whole effort was to focus attention on what is a beautiful film that deserves an audience but just hasn't got one," said Cinemark spokeswoman Terrell Falk.
"It's in competition with films with lots of special effects and big action this summer. This is a quiet film."
